Rather than having every game company design support for every individual sound-card out there, game programmers write their software to work with the standard DirectSound3D API which tells your sound card driver what to do. This is a standard way for software developers to use multichannel audio in their Windows programs. Together with NVIDIA, Dolby Labs designed a chip that will convert any other audio format into Dolby Digital in real-time, they called it the Dolby Interactive Content Encoder (DICE) but later renamed it to Dolby Digital Live.ĭirectSound3D = a programming API developed by Microsoft as part of its DirectX multimedia suite. Until recently, the only way to access Dolby Digital content was from pre-recorded sources like DVDs and Laserdiscs. This should not be confused with Dolby Digital, which is an audio compression format that encodes 5.1 discrete channels of audio into a single bitstream. It is a 2.0 channel stereo technology found in everything from TV shows to music and movies. EAX itself is not a surround sound encoding technology like Dolby Digital or DTS.ĭolby Surround = an perceptual encoding technology designed by Dolby Labs that tricks your brain into believing that you're hearing sounds coming from places where there are no speakers. EAX works in concert with Creative's 3D positioning technology (CMSS) to create surround sound effects. Designed by Dolby engineers for optimal sound, Dolby Live offers a variety of events including special music performances all in Dolby Atmos. It adds "environmental effects" like reverb and standard DSP presets like "bathroom". Located in Las Vegas, Dolby Live is the only venue in the world to feature a fully integrated Dolby Atmos playback system. Its a programming API developed by Creative Labs to help game programmers create more immersive environments.
